Merlyn Display Installation for Teachers

Before You Begin

  • Check with IT: Confirm your IT admin has set up Merlyn for your district
  • Check with IT: Your panel firmware may need to be updated
  • What's in your Merlyn kit: USB receiver and remote control
  • What you'll need: Your district login credentials
  • Time to finish: <10 minutes

Step 1: Install Required Software (3 minutes)

    • The Merlyn Display software can be downloaded from the App store on your panel.

      • For a Q21 panel, use the Newline App store
      • For a QPro panel, use the Google Play store
    • Search for "Merlyn Display" and click install when you find it.

    Depending on access settings, your display may require administrator approval to download the software. 

    If the Merlyn application or App Store is unavailable on your panel, you may be able to manually install using the steps shown here: Manual App Install

    After downloading the software, the Merlyn Display app will present you with a QR code to register in the Management Console. This is required to enable the software on the display. Using the native Camera application on your phone, scan the code, then follow the onscreen guide to register the panel. Google does not allow the use of a third-party QR code scanner for registering your panel.

    Step 3: Sign into the Merlyn App (1 minute)

    To unlock Teacher Toolkit capabilities, you may be prompted to log into the Merlyn application on your display panel using an alphanumeric code:

  • Scan the QR code for the quickest way to sign in.

    1. Copy the 6-character code shown on your panel and head to https://portal.merlyn.org/devices.

    2. Click on Add Device in the upper right hand corner:

    3. Enter the code shown in the app and click Login in the lower right to save:

Step 4: Prepare the Remote (1 minute)

Remove the QR code sticker from the front of the remote, keeping the one on the back for easy reference.

Next, turn the remote over, slide the back down and off, then remove the battery tab from the remote. Replace the battery cover.

Before using the remote control, load the batteries. If you have been using the remote for a while, the batteries may need to be replaced.

Step 5: Connect Your USB (1 minute)

Connect the USB Receiver
to the USB Cable.

Connect the USB Receiver to the Android USB 3.0 port on the rear of the panel.

Merlyn will not fully function when connected to any other USB port.

Leave the cable hanging down free of any tape, zip ties, or other restrictions.  2e_USB Cable Screen.png

After connecting the USB receiver, you should several prompts to allow permissions and access to Merlyn. Please approve these as they appear. 

Step 6: Test out the basic functions (2 minutes)

  • Basic remote functions:
    • Press the small orange button to access the Merlyn menu
    • Use the pointer button to control your cursor, and the big orange button to click
    • Use the D-pad to scroll on pages or move across tabs
  • Try these voice commands:
    • Press and hold the microphone button while speaking
    • Say "Set a timer for 2 minutes" or "Open my browser"
    • Say "Help" to access all help articles
